AISI 431
Under the standardization AISI 431, we understand the following material in the German material system:
The AISI 431 is a heat treatable martensitic, nickel-bearing grade and has a very high corrosion resistance it has excellent tensile and torque strength, and good toughness, making it ideally suited to shafting and bolt applications. It can be hardened to approximately 40HRC.
The AISI 431 has excellent resistance to a wide variety of corrosive media. It has a very good resistance to salt water in cold southern waters but is unlikely to be successful in warmer tropical waters. Overall the corrosion resistance of 431 is approximately the same or slightly below as the AISI 304.
The Welding of this material is difficult due to the risk of cracking.
Some application areas of this material are: General engineering industry, automotive industry, Chemical industry, Oil and gas industry, Aerospace industry and Power station construction, Nuts and bolts, Propeller shafting, Pump shafts and Marine hardware.
